it’s going to be a crooked little winter
skeletons of trees, my blackwater child
wooohoooo!
JONATHAN CHERRY: What gets you up in the morning?
KELLY BROWN: The sun. I run on the sun, I have never been much of a night person.
JC: Are there any emerging artists inspiring you at the moment?
KB: Not specifically. I admire and am constantly impressed by all types of artists, However, when it comes to being inspired it’s usually not from the visual or even the emotion of the art but the dedication and passion behind it.
JC: What initially drew you towards photography?
KB: I started shooting in high school and at that time I was drawn towards the process of making an image. All the steps, from loading the film, to composing the photograph and finally making it emerge in the darkroom.
JC: Top photography blogs that you couldn’t go without?
KB: Thats a tough one… American Suburb X, Pictures Music, Fraction Magazine, Tiny Vices, Foto8 & most of my college peers.
JC: What is your current project all about?
KB: My newest project is in the very early stages of research but I am getting really excited about it. The focus is on young people who are living alternative and sustainable lifestyles in cities. It is a topic I am eagerly seeking advice on and my hope is that the project will make others reflect on or question their own lifestyle choices.
JC: Any advice to recent photography graduates?
KB: Well, considering I am a recent college grad I won’t pretend to think I have any great advice but I will say shoot as much as you can. Even if you don’t have your camera on you, make photographs in your head. Anywhere I go I am always stopping, scanning the scene, and composing photos, even if I don’t take them. (But always try to have your camera on you!)
JC: Other thoughts?
KB: Talk to everyone but only if its genuine and push yourself outside your comfort zone.
